So, shampooing is still a good thing to do, right?
Absolutely. Shampooing is essential for maintaining a clean, healthy scalp (and don't just take our word for it- check this list from the American Academy of Dermatologists for maintaining healthy hair). There are many "low-poo" options out there for people who might be sensitive to certain surfactants (the ingredients that make traditional shampoo sudsy), but scrubbing the scalp with your finger pads- not tips!- and using a scalp cleanser is not only good for your hair and scalp; it's necessary.
Should I shampoo every single day?
It depends. How often you should shampoo your hair is dependent on several factors, including how oily your scalp typically is and the texture/density of your hair. Whether your hair is chemically treated is also a factor for determining how often to shampoo. The best way to determine a regimen for your specific needs is by booking a consultation appointment, but this article should help you get a general idea.
What about fine hair or oily scalps?
You should probably shampoo every day or every other day. Choose a lightweight shampoo and conditioner formulated for daily use (we recommend Loma Daily Shampoo and Daily Conditioner). Shampoo only at the scalp, scrubbing with finger pads. Only repeat if absolutely necessary (since you shampoo daily, you don't want to strip and dry out your hair by repeating the shampoo process several times in a row if you don't have to). Condition primarily at ends, or skip the conditioner and use a lightweight leave-in product before drying your hair (we recommend the ELEVEN Australia Miracle Hair Treatment).
What about coarse, or heavily textured hair?
You should probably shampoo 3-5 days. These types of hair typically correspond with a drier scalp, so it may not be necessary to strip your scalp's natural oils by shampooing daily. When you do shampoo, use a more nourishing shampoo and conditioning product (we recommend the Living Proof Curl line for this). If you notice that your hair feels dry, you can rinse hair and use conditioner between shampoos, or even use a "cleansing conditioner" (we recommend DevaCurl No-Poo).
Okay, but what if my hair and scalp have been chemically altered or affected by age?
Shampoo slightly less often than is recommended for your hair type. Both chemical processes/treatments and older scalps tend to result in drier hair, meaning that you should shampoo less so as to maintain the balance of your natural production of scalp oils. When you do shampoo, we recommend using a restorative shampoo and conditioner combo that targets your specific needs (we recommend Living Proof's Restore line for chemically treated hair and Timeless line for maintaining youthful hair and scalps).
How can I adjust to shampooing less?
Take it slow. Shampoo every other day at first, regardless of your end goal. In between shampoos, use a high-quality dry shampoo (we recommend Living Proof PhD Dry Shampoo).
What are signs I need to shampoo more often?
